TRADE NEWS: Insider Believes Miami Heat Could Try to Sign $170 Million Superstar.
The Miami Heat are often linked with top basketball stars, but in recent years, they’ve struggled to secure big-name signings. This summer, rumors circulated about potential moves for Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell, but those quickly faded.
Instead of making major roster changes, the Heat have remained largely the same, with Caleb Martin being the only significant departure. The team’s approach suggests they believe improving their health, rather than adding new players, is the key to success.
However, it’s possible the Heat could still look to make a move if the right opportunity arises. One potential option might involve revisiting past interest in Damian Lillard, who was initially expected to join Miami but ultimately signed with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Lillard’s debut season with the Bucks didn’t go as planned, with the team being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. If the Bucks struggle early in the 2024-2025 season, Miami might explore acquiring Lillard again.
ESPN’s Zach Lowe mentioned on the Bill Simmons Podcast that Miami could reconsider the failed Lillard trade. He speculated that if Milwaukee’s star, Giannis Antetokounmpo, wants to rebuild draft picks, the Heat might offer players like Tyler Herro as part of a deal for Lillard.
Acquiring Lillard, now 34 and owed over $170 million over the next three seasons, would be a “win-now” move for Miami. Meanwhile, Jimmy Butler, who just turned 35, could test free agency next summer by opting out of his contract.
The Heat may also have to decide whether to focus on building around Bam Adebayo, aligning with the development of their younger players, or go all-in for a championship by forming a “Big Three” with Butler, Lillard, and Adebayo.
