The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed another veteran goaltender, Jon Gillies, on a professional tryout (PTO) contract, following the earlier addition of Anthony Stolarz as their backup for the 2024/25 season.
Last season, the Leafs faced inconsistency in net, but Joseph Woll’s strong performance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs cemented his position as the team’s No. 1 goaltender.
With Anthony Stolarz set to back him up, the team hopes to make a deep playoff run this year. Veteran goalie Matt Murray is also still in the mix, though they’ve opted to add further competition by bringing in Gillies.
At 30 years old, Gillies has appeared in 35 NHL games throughout his career. During the 2022/23 season, he played three games with the Columbus Blue Jackets and spent most of the year in the AHL with the Tucson Roadrunners, where he recorded a .878 save percentage and a 3.70 goals-against average (GAA) over 15 games.
Although Gillies is unlikely to serve as a starter or backup in the NHL, his experience and skillset make him a potential depth piece for the Maple Leafs heading into training camp.
