The Edmonton Oilers have added veteran defenseman Travis Dermott to their roster on a professional try-out basis, according to Mark Spector of Sportsnet. This opportunity allows Dermott to potentially secure a position with his third Canadian team, following stints with Toronto and Vancouver.
Last summer, Dermott signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes. He spent the season with the NHL team but was limited to 50 games due to injuries and managed only seven points throughout the year. Consequently, he did not receive a new contract offer and became an unrestricted free agent as the Coyotes relocated to Utah.
Dermott, who was selected 34th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft, is now seeking a comeback during what should be his peak years. He turned professional the following year and made a notable impression with 24 points in 59 AHL games, showcasing strong defensive skills.
He was promoted to the NHL the next season, recording 11 points in 37 games while continuing to display solid defensive play. Despite becoming a key player on a struggling Leafs defense, his career has been marred by injuries, with only four seasons of 50 or more games—spanning from 2018 to 2021 and the previous season.
This try-out offers Dermott a chance to regain his form and provide Edmonton with versatile defensive depth, but he must first secure a spot on the roster before he can join the team that reached the Stanley Cup finals.
