Off-Season NHL Developments: Maple Leafs Interested in Tanev, Zadorov

Maple Leafs Targeting Tanev and Zadorov
The Toronto Maple Leafs aim to strengthen their defense when free agency begins on Monday. However, their salary cap situation might pose challenges.
According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving is interested in free agent defensemen Chris Tanev and Nikita Zadorov. However, competing for their services might be difficult due to limited cap space.
LeBrun noted that the Vancouver Canucks offered Zadorov a contract worth $5 million annually, but he decided to test free agency. With about 10 teams interested in Zadorov, including the Maple Leafs, Toronto’s cap situation remains a concern.
Oilers Considering Buying Out Campbell
The Edmonton Oilers secured their goaltending by re-signing backup Calvin Pickard to a two-year, $2 million contract. Their attention now shifts to Jack Campbell, who has three years left on a five-year, $25 million contract signed in 2022.
TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reported that the Oilers are exploring options to move Campbell’s contract. If no deal is reached, they might use the buyout window before it closes on Sunday. A buyout would save the Oilers significant cap space over the next few seasons.
Red Wings Negotiating with Kane
The Detroit Red Wings are working to retain free agent forward Patrick Kane. Kane, 35, joined the Red Wings in November 2023 and scored 20 goals with 47 points in 50 games.
Johnston reported that discussions between Kane and the Red Wings are ongoing. While there is interest from the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres, Detroit remains in a favorable position if terms can be agreed upon.
Predators Eyeing Stamkos
The Nashville Predators plan to pursue Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos if he becomes a free agent on Monday, according to Johnston. While Stamkos has been negotiating with Tampa Bay, his agent announced that he expects Stamkos to enter unrestricted free agency.
LeBrun noted that the Lightning and Stamkos are about $1.5 to $2 million apart per year. However, similar situations have been resolved at the last minute, as seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Evgeni Malkin in 2022.
Interest in Jets’ McGroarty Rising
The Winnipeg Jets are likely to trade prospect Rutger McGroarty this off-season, with interest heating up during the NHL Draft.
Johnston reported that the Montreal Canadiens had discussions with the Jets about McGroarty while considering offers for their No. 5 overall pick, which was used to draft Ivan Demidov. Other teams, including the Minnesota Wild, Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres, and Columbus Blue Jackets, have also shown interest.
TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger emphasized that McGroarty, drafted 14th overall in 2022, remains a highly valued prospect for the Jets, leading to substantial interest from multiple teams.
