Detroit Lions Head Coach Hints at Upcoming Changes in the Quarterback Lineup
The Detroit Lions had a breakthrough season in 2023, finally securing a division title and winning two playoff games for the first time in 30 years. As they prepare for the 2024 season, the team has high hopes of remaining in championship contention.
However, there may be changes on the horizon for their quarterback lineup.
Detroit Lions Could Soon Add a New Quarterback
During a 14-3 loss to the Giants, Lions’ quarterback Hendon Hooker suffered a concussion. Head Coach Dan Campbell mentioned that while they hope Hooker will be back by September 8, when the season begins, the team might need to bring in another quarterback soon:
“Honestly, we’re unsure of his status right now. He won’t be practicing today, likely not tomorrow either, and it’s uncertain if he’ll be ready for the week until Friday. We’re preparing him for the Chiefs game, but that’s contingent on him clearing concussion protocol,” Campbell stated.
Campbell also hinted that the team is considering adding another quarterback to share time with Nate Sudfeld in the upcoming preseason game.
“We discussed this morning whether we need to make a decision today or tomorrow. There’s a possibility, and we should have a clearer idea by this afternoon if we need to bring someone else in, just to ensure we have another option alongside Nate (Sudfeld),” Campbell said.
The head coach expressed optimism about Hooker’s performance, noting that he showed potential as the expected No. 2 quarterback behind Jared Goff.
“There were some encouraging signs,” Campbell said. “He managed to move the offense down the field, made a few good reads, had a high throw, and handled some progressions well, including a pass to the running back. Considering the limited snaps and offensive package he worked with, he showed promise.”
As Hooker remains sidelined, it will be intriguing to see what kind of competition the Lions bring in. The team is looking to create a strong backup situation behind Goff, in case he has to miss any time this season. History shows that teams can stay competitive in the playoff race when their backup quarterback can step up, and the Lions will be hoping for the same.
