Return of the “Zvezda Child”: Strahinja Eraković rejoins Red Star

BELGRADE – Fudbalski klub Crvena zvezda has finalized the biggest move of the winter transfer window, officially confirming the return of Serbian international defender Strahinja Eraković. The 25-year-old center-back arrives from Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg on a loan deal until September 1, 2026, with a permanent buy option included.

Back at the Marakana

Eraković, affectionately known by fans as “Čupa,” returns to his boyhood club where he originally rose through the youth ranks to become one of the youngest captains in the club’s history. During his first stint (2020–2023), he amassed 139 appearances and won three consecutive domestic doubles.

The defender spoke emotionally about his return during his official presentation:

“The feeling is phenomenal. I love Zvezda and I always want to play here. I’ve missed the fans, and I can’t wait to play in front of a full Marakana again. Seeing the support during the Celta match convinced me this was the right choice.”

The “Stanković Factor”

A key driver in the deal was the influence of head coach Dejan Stanković. Stanković was the manager who originally promoted Eraković to the first team in 2020. Sporting director Mitar Mrkela noted that the coach was insistent on the reunion:

  • Tactical Fit: Eraković provides much-needed international experience and versatility to a defense looking to sharpen up for the Europa League.

  • Familiarity: Having already thrived under Stanković, the integration period is expected to be non-existent.
