The Houston Astros missed several key opportunities during the 2024 MLB trade deadline, drawing criticism for their decisions. Despite general manager Dana Brown’s explanations, many believe the Astros overpaid for Yusei Kikuchi and that Caleb Ferguson may not significantly improve the bullpen.
In reality, the most notable move the Astros made was designating Rafael Montero for assignment. This could be beneficial if Montero accepts the assignment and refines his skills in the minors.
While it’s easy to critique moves in hindsight, it’s more useful to consider what the Astros could have done differently. Here are some missed opportunities:
Pushing Harder for Erick Fedde
Although the Astros arguably overpaid for Kikuchi, they may have missed out on a better deal by not pursuing Erick Fedde more aggressively. The Cardinals acquired Fedde, who boasts a 3.11 ERA, and Tommy Pham in a three-team deal, giving up an injured Tommy Edman. Houston could have matched or bettered this offer, potentially securing a more valuable starting pitcher and leaving room for another impactful trade.
Acquiring Isaac Paredes for Long-Term Gain
Isaac Paredes could have been an ideal acquisition for the Astros. He would have filled their need for a first baseman this season and could have transitioned to third base if Alex Bregman leaves in the future. However, Paredes ended up with the Cubs, and Houston missed the chance to upgrade their lineup. Trading for Paredes might have been a better use of resources than the Kikuchi deal, as it would have addressed both immediate and future needs.
Missing Out on Yandy Diaz
Rumors suggested the Astros were highly interested in Yandy Diaz, who would have been a significant upgrade at first base and provided team control through a club option for 2026. However, Diaz remained with the Rays, possibly due to Tampa Bay’s high asking price or because Houston’s limited prospect capital forced them to choose between Diaz and Kikuchi. Ultimately, the Astros opted for the rental starter, leaving many to question if it was the right choice.
