Nuggets Strategically Expand G-League Depth Ahead of Season Tip-Off
Denver continues assembling its developmental puzzle
With the preseason winding down, the Denver Nuggets are not only finalizing their NBA roster but also reinforcing their G-League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Gold. On Monday, they signed Terrence Hargrove Jr. and Coleman Hawkins to Exhibit 10 contracts—short-term deals that allow teams to evaluate talent before potentially assigning players to the G-League.
The Nuggets promptly waived both players, a procedural move designed to funnel them to Grand Rapids if they clear waivers. While this may seem unusual, it’s a common tactic across the league, offering fringe prospects a financial boost and a shot at proving themselves.
For Denver, it’s a low-risk opportunity to scout under-the-radar talent—essentially buying a few lottery tickets that could pay off with a two-way contract or even a full-time NBA role. Most likely, these players won’t suit up in Denver, but the upside is undeniable if one breaks through.
Denver Doubles Down on Wing Depth Strategy
Throughout the offseason, the Nuggets have remained committed to stockpiling versatile wing players. With Nikola Jokic anchoring the center position and Jamal Murray commanding the backcourt, the front office has focused on surrounding them with athletic wings who can shoot and defend.
This vision was evident in their acquisition of Cam Johnson and the signings of Bruce Brown and Tim Hardaway Jr. They reinforced it further by using two-way slots on Spencer Jones, Tamar Bates, and Curtis Jones—choices that prioritized wing versatility over positional need.
Even their Exhibit 10 contracts reflect this philosophy, with Kessler Edwards added earlier in the summer and now Hargrove and Hawkins joining the mix. The Nuggets clearly recognize the premium value of wings in today’s NBA and are casting a wide net to uncover hidden gems.
Whether or not these bets pay off, Denver already boasts a strong wing rotation featuring Christian Braun, Johnson, Gordon, Hardaway Jr., Brown, Julian Strawther, and Peyton Watson—plus their developmental additions. In a league where wings are gold, the Nuggets are digging deep to find the next breakout star.
