Dynamo Kyiv Stars Shine as Ukraine Triumphs 5–3 Over Iceland in World Cup Qualifier

Kyiv, Ukraine — October 11, 2025.
Dynamo Kyiv players played a pivotal role as Ukraine secured a thrilling 5–3 victory over Iceland in a pulsating 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying encounter on Friday night. The match, held at the Arena Lviv, was a showcase of attacking flair, resilience, and teamwork, with several Dynamo stars at the heart of Ukraine’s impressive performance.

Ukraine began the game with high intensity, pressing Iceland deep and creating early chances through Viktor Tsyhankov and Mykola Shaparenko, both representing Dynamo Kyiv. Shaparenko opened the scoring with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box in the 17th minute, setting the tone for a high-scoring contest.

Iceland responded through a quick counterattack, equalizing before halftime, but Dynamo’s influence continued to grow in the second half. Vitaliy Buyalskyi, showing his trademark vision and creativity, assisted Artem Dovbyk for Ukraine’s second goal, restoring the lead. Moments later, Illia Zabarnyi, another Dynamo product, anchored the defense with composure as Iceland threatened to level once more.

The turning point came in the 68th minute when Tsyhankov converted from the penalty spot after a foul on Dovbyk, giving Ukraine a 3–2 advantage. Iceland pulled one back to make it 3–3, but substitute Heorhiy Sudakov and Shaparenko combined late on to seal the dramatic 5–3 victory.

Head coach Serhiy Rebrov, himself a Dynamo Kyiv legend, praised his former club’s players after the match, saying:

“The Dynamo boys showed great discipline and fighting spirit. Their contribution was crucial to our win tonight.”

The result keeps Ukraine in a strong position in Group C, maintaining hopes of qualifying directly for the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

For Dynamo Kyiv fans, the match was a proud reminder of the club’s ongoing influence on national football, as their academy and first-team talents continue to shine on the international stage.
