Nuggets Add G League Standout Ahead of Training Camp
The Denver Nuggets continue to strengthen their roster as training camp approaches later this month.
Veteran NBA reporter Chris Haynes revealed, via Hazan Sports Management agent Daniel Hazan, that Denver has signed free agent guard Javante McCoy to a new deal.
Although specific terms haven’t been disclosed, the contract is widely expected to be an Exhibit 10 training camp agreement.
Denver’s Roster Shake-Up
The Nuggets have made significant adjustments around three-time MVP Nikola Jokic this offseason. The team traded starting forward Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Cam Johnson and also brought in veteran center Jonas Valanciunas. Additionally, Denver secured guards Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown on surprisingly low-cost minimum contracts.
Currently, Denver has 14 players on standard NBA deals, with all three of its two-way slots filled. Earlier Exhibit 10 signings included Kessler Edwards and Moses Brown. With McCoy now on board, the Nuggets sit at 20 of a possible 21 preseason roster spots.
There remains a chance that one of Edwards, Brown, or McCoy could be promoted to a two-way slot. If so, one of Denver’s current two-way players — Tamar Bates, Spencer Jones, or Curtis Jones — might be elevated to the final standard roster opening.
McCoy’s Journey
Now 27, McCoy went undrafted in 2022 despite a decorated career at Boston University, where he was a three-time All-Patriot League selection. While he has yet to make his NBA debut, McCoy has opted to remain in the G League instead of pursuing more lucrative overseas opportunities, staying focused on earning a full-time NBA roster spot.
He has previously played with the South Bay Lakers, Austin Spurs, and Motor City Cruise, the Pistons’ G League affiliate. Over 57 regular season appearances across those teams, McCoy has averaged 11.1 points per game while shooting 50.3% from the field, 31.6% from deep, and 74.5% from the line, along with 3.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 0.6 steals.
