Warriors Consider Trading Young Star for Lauri Markkanen in ‘Win-Win-Win’ Move…
With only eight days left to potentially acquire Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz, the Golden State Warriors are exploring a trade that could be highly beneficial for the team. Greg Swartz from Bleacher Report suggested on July 28 that trading their rising star, Jonathan Kuminga, for Markkanen could be advantageous for all parties involved.
Swartz noted that such a trade would be a “win-win-win” for the Warriors, Jazz, and Kuminga, allowing Kuminga to take on a larger offensive role and possibly secure a max contract as a restricted free agent in 2025. He pointed out that the Warriors could use a solid No. 2 offensive option like Markkanen and that moving Kuminga would be sensible before committing to a substantial financial deal.
Markkanen could benefit by leaving a rebuilding Jazz team for an opportunity to play alongside Stephen Curry and potentially negotiate a lucrative contract either with Golden State or another team in the future.
Although trade talks have been ongoing since mid-July, the Jazz and Warriors have yet to agree on the terms. The Jazz are interested in Kuminga and potentially other assets, but the Warriors have been hesitant to include additional players like Brandin Podziemski in the deal. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the Warriors have discussed including Moses Moody, multiple first-round picks, and pick swaps, but have been unwilling to meet the Jazz’s full demands, which include Kuminga, Podziemski, and more.
With Klay Thompson’s future uncertain, the Warriors have the financial flexibility to take on Markkanen’s contract. Kuminga appears to be the more likely trade piece, as the Warriors aim to maximize their championship window with Curry, who is nearing 36 years old. The urgency is heightened by Markkanen’s contract situation; the Jazz must either extend him by August 6 or risk losing the opportunity to trade him before the 2025 deadline. Markkanen’s value could increase post-extension, making him a more attractive trade asset.
For the Warriors, acquiring Markkanen could bolster their lineup as they strive to compete in a tough Western Conference. However, they must be cautious not to lose him after a short stint if they go all-in now.
