Marcus Mariota: Former First-Round Pick Could Be Auditioning for a New Role
With uncertainty surrounding Jayden Daniels’ availability for Week 3, Washington Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota may be stepping into more than just a temporary starting role—he could be auditioning for his NFL future. Reports suggest Mariota is “ready to go” should Daniels be sidelined against the Las Vegas Raiders, following a knee injury sustained last week versus the Green Bay Packers. Daniels underwent an MRI and has missed consecutive practices, making Mariota the likely starter.
Mariota, a 2014 first-round pick out of Oregon, isn’t expected to challenge Daniels for the long-term starting job—the Commanders are clearly building around their rookie. But with free agency looming next offseason, this could be Mariota’s final chance to prove he still belongs in the league. Now 31, his prime years with the Tennessee Titans (including three straight winning seasons from 2016–2018) are behind him, but his performance in last year’s season finale against Dallas showed he can still deliver under pressure. If he shines against the Raiders, it could open doors elsewhere.
Three Teams That Could Be Watching Closely
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers may soon be shopping for quarterback help if Bryce Young continues to struggle. Despite a promising offseason and a solid supporting cast—including a strong run game—Young has yet to find his rhythm. Veteran Andy Dalton remains a stopgap option, but Carolina might benefit from bringing in Mariota as a stabilizing presence. While they’ll likely target a long-term solution in next year’s draft, Mariota could offer short-term relief and leadership.
Cleveland Browns
The Browns are off to a familiar 0–2 start, and Joe Flacco hasn’t met expectations. Head coach Kevin Stefanski insists there are no immediate plans to change quarterbacks, but continued losses could force his hand. With Deshaun Watson still in the mix and prospects like Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel waiting in the wings, Cleveland could make a surprise move for Mariota to inject experience and mobility into their offense.
Cincinnati Bengals
With Joe Burrow sidelined for three months, the Bengals’ season hangs in the balance. Jake Browning and Brett Rypien haven’t inspired confidence, and Mariota would be a clear upgrade. While a playoff push may be a long shot, Mariota could give Cincinnati a fighting chance—and perhaps earn himself a longer-term role in the process.
