Luis Garcia Returns to Mound After Nearly Two-Year Recovery from Tommy John Surgery
Houston, TX — September 1, 2025
After 22 months of rehab, setbacks, and anticipation, Houston Astros right-hander Luis Garcia is set to make his long-awaited return to the mound today against the Los Angeles Angels at Daikin Park.
Garcia, 28, last pitched in April 2023 before undergoing Tommy John surgery, a procedure that sidelined him for nearly two full MLB seasons. His comeback marks a pivotal moment for the Astros, who are looking to solidify their rotation as the playoff race intensifies.
“It’s been a long road, but I’m grateful for every step,” Garcia said in a pregame interview. “I’ve missed the game, missed the fans, and I’m ready to compete again.”
During his rehab stint, Garcia posted a 3.30 ERA with 38 strikeouts across 30 innings in Triple-A Sugar Land, showing flashes of the deceptive delivery and command that made him a breakout star in 2021.
Manager Joe Espada confirmed Garcia will be on a pitch count for his first outing back, but emphasized the team’s confidence in his readiness. “Luis has looked sharp in his rehab starts. We’re excited to have him back in the mix,” Espada said.
Garcia’s return comes at a crucial juncture for Houston, who sit just two games behind the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners. With injuries plaguing the rotation earlier this season, Garcia’s presence could be the boost the Astros need to surge into October.
