Rangers Eye Malkin to Reinforce Offense After Playoff Miss

After a disappointing season that saw them miss the playoffs just one year removed from winning the Presidents’ Trophy, the New York Rangers are looking to bounce back—and they may be targeting a future Hall of Famer to help them do it.

According to NHL insider Jeremy Tingly of NHLTradeRumors, the Rangers are among the top contenders to land Evgeni Malkin, the three-time Stanley Cup champion who appears to be entering his final season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“Multiple reports suggest this is likely Malkin’s last year in Pittsburgh,” Tingly wrote. “The Penguins are undergoing a transition under President Kyle Dubas, aiming to get younger and faster while keeping their veteran core—at least for now.”

Malkin, who carries a $6.1 million cap hit and holds a no-movement clause, is reportedly open to destinations like Vegas, Florida, and New York. If the Penguins stumble early, trade talks could intensify, with Dubas potentially ready to overhaul the roster.

The 37-year-old center is in the final year of a four-year, $24.4 million contract. He posted 50 points (16 goals, 34 assists) in 68 games last season and could slot in as a second or third-line center for the Rangers, bringing leadership and playoff pedigree.

Penguins Preparing for Malkin’s Exit

Josh Yohe of The Athletic echoed the sentiment, reporting that Malkin’s 20th season with the Penguins will likely be his last. While retirement isn’t confirmed, sources say Pittsburgh doesn’t plan to offer him a new deal.

If Malkin becomes available ahead of the trade deadline, expect the Rangers to be among the suitors.

Sullivan Connection Could Be Key

Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan, who led the Penguins to two Stanley Cups during his tenure from 2015 to 2025, knows Malkin well. That familiarity could make a potential trade even more appealing.

Despite last season’s 39-36-7 record, Sullivan remains optimistic.

“This is a talented group,” he said. “There’s real potential here to be a competitive team.”
