Mascherano: “We’re targeting one or two signings” as Inter Miami eyes Piovi deal
With the MLS transfer window set to close on August 21, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has made it clear: the club is actively pursuing reinforcements, but he’s determined to avoid any more exits.
Departures & arrivals
- Drake Callender has officially joined Charlotte FC.
- Gonzalo Piovi is edging closer to a move to Miami.
- The Herons face Tigres in the Leagues Cup quarterfinal tomorrow.
Mascherano addressed the media ahead of the Tigres clash, confirming that the club is working on finalizing one or two additions before the deadline. Among them is Cruz Azul’s Gonzalo Piovi, whose name has been circulating for weeks.
“We’ll keep assessing until the final day,” Mascherano said. “The club is trying to bring in one or two players. I hope it happens. But I don’t expect anyone else to leave—we want to keep the squad intact through the end of the season.”
He acknowledged the Piovi rumors, saying:
“It’s already out there. The club is working on it. There’s also another defensive target being considered.”
The Piovi Situation
Cruz Azul manager Nicolás Larcamón admitted that Piovi’s exit is a real possibility, noting the impact it could have on his squad.
“Inter Miami’s interest is serious, and with their ability to generate buzz, it’s hard to ignore. Piovi’s versatility makes him vital to our attack. Losing him would hurt, but we trust the rest of our team.”
Piovi, 30, has made 60 appearances for Cruz Azul since arriving in 2024. He previously played in Argentina’s top division and would bolster Miami’s growing Argentine core.
Transfer Details
- Inter Miami is reportedly ready to offer $6–7 million.
- Cruz Azul signed Piovi for $2.5 million.
