Ferencváros Fortifies Backline Ahead of Champions League Clash
Budapest, August 14, 2025 — As Ferencváros TC prepares for their pivotal Champions League playoff against Qarabağ, head coach Robbie Keane is expected to double down on his trusted defensive formula: a three-man backline anchored by Toon Raemaekers, Gábor Szalai, and Stefan Gartenmann.
The trio has shown growing cohesion in recent fixtures, notably in the 3–0 dismantling of Ludogorets Razgrad. Raemaekers brings composure and ball distribution from the left, Szalai offers aerial dominance and leadership, while Gartenmann’s aggressive tackling and positional awareness round out the unit.
However, Keane’s tactical options are limited by ongoing injury and suspension concerns. Serbian striker Aleksandar Pešić remains sidelined with a lingering muscle issue, leaving Barnabás Varga to shoulder the attacking load once again. Meanwhile, Ivorian defender Ibrahim Cissé continues to serve a continental suspension, ruling him out of the Qarabağ tie.
Despite the setbacks, Ferencváros enters the playoff round with confidence and momentum. The defensive setup, bolstered by Dénes Dibusz’s return in goal, will be crucial in keeping Qarabağ’s counterattacks at bay.
