Saints Hit by Injuries: Penning Escapes Major Setback, Clapp Out for Season

The New Orleans Saints are grappling with early adversity as two key players suffered injuries during their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. While one received a hopeful prognosis, the other faces a long road to recovery.
Trevor Penning, the Saints’ 2022 first-round draft pick, was carted off the field in the second quarter after sustaining a foot injury. The left tackle appeared in visible discomfort, sparking concern among fans and teammates. However, post-game evaluations brought relief: Penning’s injury is not considered season-threatening, and he is expected to miss only a few weeks.
“Trevor’s a tough guy,” said head coach Kellen Moore. “We’re thankful it wasn’t more serious. He’ll be back soon, and we’re confident in his recovery.”
The news was far grimmer for Will Clapp, the veteran center and New Orleans native. Clapp suffered a severe Lisfranc injury—an uncommon but serious foot injury that affects the midfoot joints and ligaments. He has been placed on injured reserve and will undergo surgery, effectively ending his 2025 season.
Clapp, a fan favorite known for his grit and leadership, was entering his seventh NFL season. His absence leaves a significant void in the Saints’ offensive line depth and locker room presence.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said offensive coordinator Ronald Curry. “Will’s been a cornerstone for us. We’ll rally around him and make sure he knows he’s still part of this team every step of the way.”
The Saints are expected to explore roster options to reinforce their offensive line, including giving undrafted rookie Torricelli Simpkins III extended reps in practice.
With the regular season fast approaching, New Orleans will need to adapt quickly to keep their playoff hopes alive.
