‘It Was a Great Day for Me and My Family’: K’Andre Miller on Joining, Extending With Carolina Hurricanes

In a bold and strategic move this offseason, the Carolina Hurricanes have added a key piece to their blue line with the acquisition of defenseman K’Andre Miller from the New York Rangers. The 25-year-old wasted no time in affirming his long-term commitment to the franchise, signing a contract extension shortly after the deal was finalized.

In his first media appearance as a Hurricane, Miller described the moment as transformative—both professionally and personally.

“It was a great day for me and my family,” Miller told reporters. “Getting the call and then working out the extension right away—it just felt right. Carolina’s a team on the rise, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

A Defensive Force Comes South

Miller, who spent five seasons with the Rangers after being selected 22nd overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, brings size (6’5″), skating ability, and physicality to the Hurricanes’ blue line. He posted career highs in assists and time on ice last season, drawing attention from several teams across the league.

The Hurricanes, known for their aggressive but calculated approach to team-building, saw Miller as a perfect fit. Sources say the front office had been pursuing a two-way defenseman with upside—someone who could anchor the second pairing while growing into a top-pairing role.

“K’Andre is exactly the kind of player we want in our system,” said Canes GM Don Waddell. “He’s disciplined, physical, mobile—and he has the kind of work ethic we value deeply.”

✍️ A Long-Term Vision

Miller’s extension reportedly spans six years with a cap hit just over $6 million annually—a deal that reflects both his current value and potential upside.

“It’s more than just the money or term,” Miller added. “It’s about being part of something that’s building toward a championship. I’ve seen how passionate the fans are here and how this locker room is wired to win.”

The move also solidifies Carolina’s defensive core heading into the 2025–26 season. With Jaccob Slavin, Brent Burns, and now Miller under contract, the Hurricanes boast one of the NHL’s most formidable blue lines.

Change of Scenery, Same Determination

While the trade marks a significant shift for Miller—leaving the only NHL franchise he’s ever known—he insists it was a welcome challenge.

“I’ll always be grateful to the Rangers, but this is a new chapter. I’m excited to grow as a player, compete in the playoffs, and contribute however I can.”

Coaches and teammates have already praised Miller’s attitude and immediate impact during early offseason workouts. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour called him “a natural fit” and noted that Miller’s on-ice intelligence and off-ice humility make him an ideal addition.

Looking Ahead

The Hurricanes are clearly in “win-now” mode. With Miller joining recent additions like Nikolaj Ehlers, and contract extensions locked in for several key players, Carolina is preparing for a serious run in 2026.

Miller is ready for the expectations.

“It’s time to get to work,” he said with a grin. “This team believes in me—and I’m here to prove them right.”
