Yankees All-Star Trade Target’s Attitude Raises Concerns
As the MLB trade deadline looms, rumors about the Yankees’ potential moves are heating up, with at least one significant trade likely before the end of July. The team is ideally looking to address multiple needs in one transaction, targeting versatile players who can cover various positions.
One such candidate is Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm. Primarily a centerfielder (184 starts), Chisholm has also played second base (156 starts) and shortstop (37 starts). This versatility makes him an attractive target for the Yankees, who need options to replace struggling players like Gleyber Torres at second base and Anthony Volpe at shortstop, while also providing Aaron Judge with rest days in centerfield. Additionally, Chisholm has experience as a leadoff hitter, a role the Yankees need to strengthen.
However, concerns arise about how Chisholm would fit into the Yankees clubhouse and his durability over the years. ESPN’s Jorge Castillo highlighted these worries, noting the Yankees’ hesitation regarding Chisholm’s personality. Similar concerns have been echoed by ESPN’s Jeff Passan and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, with the Phillies reportedly showing no interest in Chisholm due to these issues.
Despite these concerns, Chisholm’s talent is undeniable. An All-Star in 2022, he is currently batting .251 with a .325 on-base percentage and a .412 slugging percentage, hitting 13 home runs and stealing 21 bases. These stats would place him fourth in homers and first in steals on the Yankees’ roster, which lacks speed.
Chisholm’s contract, which has him under team control for two more years, adds to his appeal. While some question his fit in most clubhouses, insiders like Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggest that the Yankees’ strong veteran leadership could manage his personality effectively. Rosenthal argues that Chisholm could be a viable option, potentially acquired at a lower cost due to these concerns.
Rosenthal further points out that the Yankees have successfully integrated players with strong personalities, such as Marcus Stroman and Alex Verdugo, suggesting that they could do the same with Chisholm. This potential for a positive fit in the right environment makes Chisholm an intriguing trade target for the Yankees.
