Prescription drug misuse is surging, with many individuals using medications recreationally for their sedative or euphoric effects. Even those with legitimate prescriptions may develop dependencies that compromise their ability to care for children. Gabapentinoids, for instance, are linked to disinhibition and mood swings, while oxycodone can cause profound cognitive and physical impairment.
Hallucinogens and Steroids: The Overlooked Risks
Hallucinogens pose unique challenges. Their effects—paranoia, dissociation, and hallucinations—can persist long after use, making them particularly dangerous in parenting contexts. Meanwhile, anabolic steroids, often used to enhance physical appearance, are associated with aggression and erratic behavior. These risks are rarely addressed in family law, despite their relevance in contact disputes and safeguarding evaluations.
