Nuggets Coach Comments on Russell Westbrook’s Injury Against Clippers
Following their overtime win in Game 1, the Denver Nuggets have now dropped two straight games to the LA Clippers, trailing 1-2 in the series. Facing a deficit is tough enough, but injuries are now becoming an even bigger concern for Denver.
During their Game 3 loss, the Nuggets suffered a major setback when key sixth man Russell Westbrook exited early due to injury and did not return, leaving a significant gap in the team’s rotation.
Reports indicate that Westbrook had been battling an injury even before tip-off. He tried to push through it but ultimately had to leave the game early. According to an update, Westbrook is dealing with inflammation in his left foot and was listed as questionable to return after apparently rolling his foot or ankle during warmups.
By the time Westbrook left Thursday’s game, Denver was already trailing by 18 points in the second quarter, and he was unable to return for the remainder of the night. After the game, interim head coach David Adelman addressed Westbrook’s condition.
“Something seemed to happen with his hip, I think,” Adelman said. “I’m still waiting for Steve Short [team medical staff] to confirm. I checked on him, he was getting treatment, and they said he wouldn’t be available for the second half, so we adjusted from there. Honestly, there weren’t many positives from tonight.”
Adelman added, “One good thing was giving some younger guys a chance with Russ out, to see their comfort level — which might be important for Game 4, depending on Russ’s situation, which we’re still learning more about.”
While the team initially reported foot inflammation, Adelman’s comment about a hip issue has caused some confusion. More clarity on Westbrook’s exact injury should come soon.
Through the first two games, Westbrook had been a crucial contributor, averaging 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.5 steals while hitting 41.7% from three-point range, notably stepping up during the Game 1 victory.
The Nuggets desperately need Westbrook’s energy and leadership off the bench as they head into a pivotal Game 4 in LA on Saturday. His availability remains uncertain.
