Mel Kiper’s Final 3-Round Mock Draft Projects Georgia Pass Rusher to Lions

Mel Kiper’s Final 3-Round Mock Draft Projects Georgia Pass Rusher to Lions

With the 2025 NFL Draft just around the corner, the final mock drafts are starting to surface, bringing with them new predictions and draft buzz. One of the most well-known analysts in the game, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., has released his final three-round mock — this time teaming up with Field Yates to forecast selections for all 32 teams.

For the Detroit Lions, Kiper’s projection offers a well-rounded mix of talent, particularly aimed at boosting the defense and solidifying the offensive line.

Round 1, Pick 28: Mykel Williams, EDGE, Georgia
Kiper has the Lions selecting Georgia edge rusher Mykel Williams with their first-round pick. Detroit has been searching for a reliable complement to Aidan Hutchinson on the edge, and Williams could be the answer.

Kiper noted, “We often talk about Detroit’s need for another pass rusher opposite Hutchinson — let’s solve that. Williams wins with burst and has the potential for more under new DC Kelvin Sheppard.”

At 6’5″ and 265 pounds, Williams brings a rare combination of size and athleticism. He may not be a finished product, but his upside is significant, and he could see action early in passing situations.

Round 2, Pick 60: Marcus Mbow, G, Purdue
In the second round, Kiper addresses the interior offensive line with Marcus Mbow from Purdue, suggesting he could immediately compete for the open right guard spot.

“There’s a clear opportunity at right guard, and Mbow can battle for it alongside Kayode Awosika and Christian Mahogany,” Kiper wrote.

Mbow has experience at both guard and tackle, giving him the flexibility the Lions covet. His strength and length make him a strong candidate to contribute right away.

Round 3, Pick 102: Barrett Carter, LB, Clemson
While linebacker isn’t Detroit’s biggest concern, adding depth and long-term talent is never a bad idea. Kiper projects Clemson’s Barrett Carter as the Lions’ third-round choice, offering a blend of athleticism and coverage ability.

“Carter’s production — 77 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 9 pass deflections — shows his versatility,” Kiper commented.

With Alex Anzalone nearing the end of his contract and health concerns at the position, Carter could be a key rotational player with the potential to grow into a starting role alongside Jack Campbell.

Final Thoughts
Kiper’s mock draft presents a well-rounded and strategic class for Detroit — a dynamic edge rusher, a potential Day 1 starter at guard, and a promising linebacker. All three prospects hail from top-tier college programs and fit Detroit’s mold of tough, versatile players. If this mock plays out as predicted, GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell should be pleased with their draft haul.
