Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews Responds to Panthers Coach’s Remarks…
The Toronto Maple Leafs secured a 3–2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, maintaining their lead in the Atlantic Division and clinching their ninth straight playoff appearance. Despite this achievement, the Leafs have yet to win the division since its inception in 2013. With 96 points and seven games remaining, Toronto now sits atop the standings.
For team captain Auston Matthews, the division title is a key objective. “I think (winning the division is) in the mindset for sure,” Matthews said before the game. “During this final stretch, we want to ensure our game is heading in the right direction. You definitely want to go for that top spot.”
Florida coach Paul Maurice, however, downplayed the importance of finishing first. When asked about its significance, Maurice dismissed the notion, stating, “I see no value in (finishing first). You’re going to have to beat a team from Ontario and a team from Florida regardless to reach your goal.”
Maurice emphasized the strength of potential playoff opponents, arguing that seeding isn’t a major factor. “If you do that and win your games, your reward might be facing the Washington Capitals or Carolina Hurricanes,” he said. “Believe me, you won’t feel comfortable playing either of those teams.”
Toronto wraps up the season with two more matchups against both Florida and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa currently holds second place in the Atlantic with a 44-25-5 record and 93 points, having played one fewer game than both the Leafs and Panthers.
