Texas Longhorns’ secondary coach Terry Joseph is set to join the New Orleans Saints’ coaching staff, marking another departure from Texas to the NFL. Horns247 has confirmed that Joseph, who was recently named safeties coach and defensive passing game coordinator, will be making the move.
Joseph becomes the third Texas assistant to leave this offseason, following Blake Gideon to Georgia Tech and Tashard Choice to the Detroit Lions. Orangebloods first reported the news.
Texas had recently adjusted its coaching roles, with Joseph taking over as safeties coach after Gideon’s departure. The Longhorns also hired Rutgers assistant Mark Orphey to coach the cornerbacks and brought in Chad Scott from West Virginia to replace Choice.
Joseph has been part of Texas’ coaching staff since Steve Sarkisian took over in 2021. Before his time in Austin, he held coaching positions at Notre Dame, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, and LSU.
The 2024 season was a standout year for the Texas secondary, as the team ranked No. 7 in pass defense nationally (No. 1 in the SEC). Texas also celebrated its third Thorpe Award winner, Jahdae Barron, who, along with safety Andrew Mukuba, is projected to be an early pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Beyond his coaching success, Joseph was a key recruiter for Texas, particularly in Louisiana, helping land top talents like Wardell Mack, Derek Williams Jr., and Arch Manning. His recruiting impact extended beyond Louisiana, playing a role in securing players such as Kobe Black and Malik Muhammad. Texas responded to Joseph’s departure by bringing in another strong recruiter from Louisiana, LaAllan Clark, as the new defensive ends coach.
It remains uncertain how Texas will fill Joseph’s position, though the recent hire of Mark Orphey as the cornerbacks coach suggests they may have already identified a potential replacement.
Texas also recently announced a series of staff promotions and hires:
- Mark Orphey – Cornerbacks Coach (new hire)
- Chad Scott – Running Backs Coach (new hire)

- LaAllan Clark – Edge Coach (new hire)
