JUST IN: 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan and Owner Jed York Discusses the Reason Behind Luke Farrell Signing and Brock Purdy’s Contract Extension…

Kyle Shanahan discusses the significance of signing Luke Farrell and his role in supporting George Kittle. With the possibility of Brandon Aiyuk missing the start of the season, more involvement of Farrell as a blocker could allow Kittle to focus more on his receiving duties. Shanahan emphasized the importance of having a strong No. 2 tight end behind Kittle. He noted that Farrell, signed at a favorable price, is an excellent blocker, one of the best in the NFL, and also contributes in the passing game.

Shanahan further explained that while signing Farrell does not rule out drafting another tight end, it gives the team more depth at the position. Farrell, mainly known for his blocking, brings more physicality than Kyle Juszczyk, the team’s previous secondary tight end. Shanahan added that having a second tight end who can block effectively allows Kittle to focus on routes and receiving without overburdening him in pass protection, an issue that arose last season due to Kittle’s increased pass-blocking snaps.

The addition of Farrell could be especially valuable in light of Aiyuk’s possible absence, allowing Kittle to be more active in the passing game. Shanahan’s move to bolster the tight end position is strategically aimed at improving the 49ers’ offensive balance and maximizing Kittle’s potential.

Meanwhile, 49ers owner Jed York addressed the team’s offseason changes, citing the need for sacrifices to afford a contract extension for Brock Purdy. York acknowledged that while roster changes have been frustrating for fans, the financial restructuring was essential for securing Purdy’s future. The negotiations for Purdy’s extension have been positive, and York is confident that a deal will be reached, despite the frustration surrounding the delay. York highlighted the importance of locking in Purdy as the team’s long-term quarterback, ensuring stability for future success.
