NHL Announces Historic Achievement by Leon Draisaitl…
The Edmonton Oilers took on the Calgary Flames on Saturday night, aiming to break a two-game losing streak. Calgary struck first, with Yegor Sharangovich scoring early in the opening period. The game remained 1-0 until late in the second period when Oilers forward Victor Arvidsson found the net to even the score. The third period saw both teams exchange goals, with Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl scoring his 50th of the season. This milestone made him only the second active player—alongside Alex Ovechkin—to achieve four seasons with at least 50 goals. However, Draisaitl’s memorable night didn’t end there.
The German forward made NHL history in overtime, securing the game-winning goal and setting a new single-season record for the most overtime goals (six). The NHL shared the news on social media, highlighting the historic moment with the message, “Most overtime goals in a single season (6).” Their post further acknowledged his achievement, stating, “Leon Draisaitl has added his name to the record books.”
Before Draisaitl’s record-breaking goal, five players had shared the previous record of five overtime goals in a single season: Alex Galchenyuk (2016-17), Brad Marchand (2017-18), Sebastian Aho (2024-25), Jonathan Toews (2015-16), and Steven Stamkos (2011-12). With nine games remaining in the regular season, Draisaitl has an opportunity to extend his record. The Oilers will be back in action on Tuesday, facing the Vegas Golden Knights at 10 p.m. ET.
