Cam Newton Suggests Colts Lack Confidence in Anthony Richardson…
Anthony Richardson entered the NFL with high expectations, leading the Indianapolis Colts to select him with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft. However, his performance so far hasn’t been convincing enough for the team to fully commit to him as their long-term quarterback.
In a significant move, the Colts signed former New York Giants first-round pick Daniel Jones to a one-year, $14 million contract in free agency. Former NFL MVP Cam Newton believes this decision could mark the beginning of the end for Richardson in Indianapolis.
“Man, this (expletive) says a lot, boy,” Newton remarked on his podcast, *4th&1 with Cam Newton*, last Friday. “If I’m Anthony Richardson, you pull that (expletive) again that you did last year. … I bet we won’t hear no more, ‘I’m tired, boss.'”
Newton referenced a moment from last season when Richardson took himself out of a game against the Texans, a decision that drew criticism.
Jones, who played for both the Giants and Vikings last season, reportedly sees a better opportunity to start in Indianapolis. Newton believes the Colts brought him in to challenge Richardson and push him out of his comfort zone.
“They brought him in there to compete, to make Anthony Richardson uncomfortable,” Newton stated. “Ain’t no feelings in this (expletive), man. Big business. … They’re approaching it that way, and Anthony Richardson needs to take this seriously.”
Newton emphasized that Richardson must step up and embrace the responsibilities that come with being an NFL quarterback, both on and off the field.
Last season, Richardson struggled with accuracy, completing just 47.7% of his passes. He averaged 164.9 passing yards per game, throwing eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions while leading the Colts to a 6-5 record as a starter.
