The New Orleans Saints are expected to target their future franchise quarterback in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Before the offseason began, there was speculation that the Saints might move on from Derek Carr. However, his contract makes an immediate departure difficult, meaning he will likely remain the starter in 2025.
That said, the team may still look for a long-term solution at quarterback, allowing them to transition away from Carr’s contract in the near future. The 2025 NFL Draft presents an opportunity to find their next QB, though landing the right player is never easy.
Saints Could Take a Chance on Shedeur Sanders
Holding the ninth overall pick, New Orleans might find it challenging to secure a top-tier quarterback. Cam Ward is projected to be the first overall selection, while Shedeur Sanders’ draft stock remains uncertain, with projections ranging from a top-six pick to potentially falling out of the first round.
With Sanders’ stock seemingly slipping, The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt speculates that the Saints could target the son of Deion Sanders with their first-round selection.
“The Saints have limited options to improve at quarterback and may be stuck with Carr for now. They are already $47 million over the salary cap, and cutting Carr before June 1 would only save $1.3 million. A trade also seems unlikely. Given the circumstances, they will likely keep him for another year.
However, that wouldn’t stop them from drafting a quarterback. If Sanders drops out of the top five and the Saints view him as their future franchise QB, selecting him at No. 9 could be a gamble worth taking.”
