Former Reds Star Predicts Breakout Year for Elly de la Cruz
Elly de la Cruz, the electrifying 23-year-old shortstop and 2024 All-Star, has already made a significant impact on the Cincinnati Reds in his first two MLB seasons. Last year, he showcased his elite speed and power, swiping 67 bases and hitting 25 home runs. With his rare combination of athleticism, strength, and a powerful arm, the Dominican star is seen as the cornerstone of the Reds’ future as they aim to return to contention.
Projections for de la Cruz’s 2025 season estimate 26 home runs, 53 stolen bases, and an .803 OPS—numbers that indicate steady progress in his third year. However, former Reds All-Star Sean Casey believes de la Cruz is capable of far more.
On *The Mayor’s Office* podcast, Casey—who played for the Reds from 1999 to 2005 and made three All-Star appearances—expressed his belief that de la Cruz could reach unprecedented heights. “When you watch Elly De La Cruz play, there’s another level for this guy, there really is,” Casey said. “You’re talking about someone who could put up Ronald Acuña Jr. 40-70 numbers or even Shohei Ohtani-like 50-50 production.”
Casey also pointed to Reds manager Terry Francona’s visit to see de la Cruz in the Dominican Winter League as a sign that the young star is the franchise’s focal point. This offseason, Cincinnati made key moves to bolster their roster, hiring Francona and acquiring Gavin Lux, Brady Singer, Jose Trevino, and veteran outfielder Austin Hays. With these additions, the Reds are aiming to secure their first full-season playoff berth since 2013 in what promises to be a competitive NL Central race.
