Braves Chairman Hints at More Moves—Could a Big Signing Be Coming?
Some people call me Nostradamus, and they might be onto something. Less than a day after I predicted the Braves would make another move before Opening Day, Evan Drellich of The Athletic released an interview with Braves Chairman Terry McGuirk confirming the team still has the financial flexibility to strike again this offseason. And it could happen soon.
“We have consistently operated as a top-10 payroll team over the last few years,” McGuirk told The Athletic. “That’s not changing. We’ve surpassed the competitive balance tax in each of the past two seasons, and it’s possible we’ll do it again this year. … (President of Baseball Operations) Alex Anthopoulos has always had the resources to assemble a championship-caliber roster, and this season is no different. We still have some dry powder.”
McGuirk also pointed out the abundance of remaining free agents, reminding fans that late-offseason signings aren’t uncommon. “Just last year, we signed Adam Duvall on March 17,” he noted. “Who knows how things will unfold this spring?”
Where Do the Braves Need Help?
Atlanta’s offense is locked and loaded for 2025. Once Ronald Acuña Jr. returns, the Braves boast arguably the deepest lineup in baseball one that even the star-studded Dodgers can’t match.
The real concern? Pitching.
The Braves have surprisingly held off on adding another high-leverage reliever, despite losing A.J. Minter in free agency and Joe Jiménez to knee surgery, sidelining him for most of the season. That’s two of their best setup men from last year yet no real effort has been made to replace them.
The starting rotation also looks thin. Keep an eye on Ian Anderson this spring Atlanta was hoping he’d show enough to secure a roster spot, given he’s out of minor league options. But if he struggles, the Braves won’t have the luxury of keeping him around, further straining their already shaky rotation depth. At that point, adding a veteran innings-eater may become less of an option and more of a necessity especially with Opening Day just weeks away.
