The Boston Red Sox may be facing a brewing controversy. After securing superstar infielder Alex Bregman last week, reports are surfacing that current third baseman Rafael Devers isn’t thrilled about shifting to a designated hitter role to make room for Bregman. While it’s not a certainty, there’s a growing chance this situation could spiral, potentially leading Devers to request a trade out of Boston as early as this season.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently identified the Philadelphia Phillies as a possible landing spot should the Red Sox decide to part ways with Devers. “It feels like next offseason is when Philly might try to engineer another marquee addition, but we can never count out Dave Dombrowski when a big-ticket player hits the market,” Kline noted. He emphasized that the Phillies are locked in a fierce battle with Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York in the highly competitive National League, and adding Devers behind Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Bryce Harper could solidify Philadelphia as a top-tier powerhouse.
The Phillies have already been linked to both Bregman and trade target Nolan Arenado, and they’ve reportedly been open to dealing All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm—who could serve as a key trade piece for Devers. However, the biggest hurdle for Philadelphia may be their farm system, which might lack the depth needed to pull off such a blockbuster deal.
