Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman shared an unforgettable run with the Houston Astros, securing two World Series titles together. However, for the first time since 2016, they will be on opposite sides of the diamond as Bregman joins the Boston Red Sox with a three-year, $120 million deal. While Altuve recognizes the huge impact Bregman will have on both the field and in the clubhouse, he understands the business side of baseball. In an interview with Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle, Altuve expressed his admiration for the deal Bregman earned, acknowledging that it was a well-deserved contract for such a talented player.
“We lost a big player, obviously,” Altuve said. “But we’ve got to focus on the guys we have here. He’s one of the best to ever play in Houston. We’ll miss him, but we’re also happy for him. That’s a great deal, man – $40 million, not many players get that, and he earned it.”
Altuve added, “We’ve got to move on and focus on the team we have. We’ve got plenty of talent, and we’re still focused on winning. We’ll see Alex down the road when we face Boston.”
Altuve had already been with the Astros for five years before Bregman joined the team in 2016. Over the years, he’s watched Bregman become a key player, posting a .272 batting average, 191 home runs, and 663 RBIs, earning two All-Star selections. Together, they helped elevate the Astros’ stature in the league.
With Bregman’s departure, the Astros’ dynamic will change, but they’re prepared. Houston acquired Isaac Paredes in a trade for Kyle Tucker, and Paredes is set to step in at third base. Altuve himself has expressed a willingness to adjust his position to ensure the team’s success moving forward.
Altuve remains confident that the Astros will continue to thrive, even as 2025 ushers in a new chapter for the team. While he respects Bregman’s new contract, Altuve knows that the Houston roster will look quite different next season.
