It’s no secret Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes has a well-documented affinity for drafting Alabama standouts. Since taking the reins in 2021, he’s added four Crimson Tide products to Detroit’s roster: Jameson Williams (1st Round), Jahmyr Gibbs (1st Round), Brian Branch (2nd Round), and Terrion Arnold (1st Round).
So, could Holmes dip into Alabama’s talent pool once again when the Lions make their selection at No. 28 in the 2025 NFL Draft? Or, given his history of aggressive moves, could he trade up to secure his guy? According to Dan Parr of NFL.com, that’s exactly what might happen.
Lions Land Another Alabama Playmaker
In his first 2025 NFL Mock Draft, Parr has the Lions selecting Alabama linebacker/EDGE Jihaad Campbell with the 28th overall pick.
“Brad Holmes has taken at least one Crimson Tide player in each of the past three drafts,” Parr noted. “He keeps the streak alive with Campbell, a dynamic defender who can bring immediate pressure off the edge and transition into an off-ball linebacker role if needed.”

Should the Lions Prioritize Another Linebacker?
If Detroit pulls the trigger on Campbell, they’ll be adding an explosive playmaker with sideline-to-sideline speed. However, while Parr lists him as an LB/EDGE, it’s debatable whether he’ll be a true edge rusher in the NFL. This raises an important question: Should the Lions invest another first-round pick in a linebacker when pressing needs exist on the defensive and offensive lines?
Holmes has repeatedly emphasized that he prioritizes talent over positional needs in the draft. If Campbell is still on the board at No. 28, expect the Lions to seriously consider him keeping their Alabama connection alive for a fourth straight year.
