Three Possible Replacements for Tyler Bowen as Virginia Tech’s Offensive Coordinator…
Head coach Brent Pry faces a crucial hiring decision after losing offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen to Ohio State.
Following the dismissal of three assistant coaches in December, Pry took nearly seven weeks to fill the defensive coordinator role, ultimately hiring Arizona Cardinals linebackers coach. Now, he must shift his focus to securing a new offensive coordinator.
On Wednesday, Bowen accepted a role as Ohio State’s offensive line coach under Ryan Day. While the timing isn’t ideal for hiring a new OC, Pry must make a strong choice. Here are three candidates who could step into the role at Virginia Tech:
Neal Brown
After West Virginia parted ways with head coach Neal Brown last fall, Pry brought in Brown’s offensive line coach, Matt Moore, for the same position at Virginia Tech. Now, Brown is available and could be a valuable addition as offensive coordinator.
Brown has extensive experience coaching offenses, previously serving as an OC and quarterbacks coach at Troy, Kentucky, and Texas Tech. With Kyron Drones returning as quarterback in 2025, Brown’s expertise could help maximize the dual-threat QB’s potential. He’s a name worth watching.
Josh Gattis
Recently let go as Maryland’s offensive coordinator, Josh Gattis has built a reputation as an innovative offensive mind. He has worked with top programs and legendary coaches, including stints as co-OC at Alabama and OC roles at Michigan, Miami, and Maryland.
Gattis also has ties to Pry, having been part of James Franklin’s staff at Penn State. Given their past connection, he could be a strong candidate for the job.
Fontel Mines
This might be a long shot, but why not promote assistant head coach, wide receivers coach, and offensive recruiting coordinator Fontel Mines? His name immediately came to mind when Bowen’s departure was announced.
Mines has played a key role in Virginia Tech’s recent recruiting success, bringing in several key offensive players. While this would be a major leap for him, his impact on the program suggests he’s earned the opportunity. Taking a chance on Mines could pay off.
