Believe it or not, Pete Carroll isn’t the only one with the family name on his coaching staff. In his first season as head coach of the Raiders, Carroll has spent the past few weeks shaping his ideal coaching team as the Raiders look to tackle the challenges of competing in the AFC West. And true to form, the staff features more than just one Carroll there are actually two.
This week, the Raiders unveiled their full coaching staff, revealing that the Carroll era in Vegas is set to be a family affair. Both of Pete Carroll’s sons have secured key positions on the offensive side of the ball. Brennan will take on the role of run game coordinator and offensive line coach, while Nate will serve as the assistant quarterbacks coach. While Chip Kelly’s hiring as offensive coordinator is notable, having both of Pete’s sons on the staff is arguably the most eye-catching aspect of the announcement.
However, there’s nothing particularly surprising about this development. The “N” in NFL could easily stand for nepotism, and Pete Carroll isn’t the first coach to bring his sons into the fold. Bill Belichick has been doing it for decades, and it’s worked out well for him. Sure, it’s probably frustrating for anyone else hoping to land the assistant quarterback coach position, but that’s the reality when you’re up against Pete Carroll’s kids. And just in case it helps ease the sting, both Brennan and Nate have amassed plenty of coaching experience in their careers, so they’re not just riding on their last name. Still, not exactly the comfort you were hoping for, huh?
