JUST IN: Boston Bruins Shake Up Roster, Demote Two High-Profile Prospects to AHL in Surprising Move.

The Boston Bruins are currently on a two-week break following a tough 4-3 defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights at TD Garden on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Knights secured the game-winning goal with just 1:10 left in the third period, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity. This loss marked the second consecutive game where the Bruins lost after entering the third period with a lead.

While the team takes a much-needed break from games, they will resume practice next week. On Sunday, the Bruins made a roster move, sending two of their prospects, Matthew Poitras and Michael Callahan, down to the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the duration of the break, where they will likely see more playing time.

The move to send Poitras and Callahan to the AHL is not unexpected. Both players were eligible to be sent down without having to clear waivers. Poitras, who was previously sent down in November by former head coach Jim Montgomery, has shown strong play during his time in Boston, recording one goal and 10 assists in 26 games. He’s notably contributed to some of David Pastrnak’s goals during key shift changes.

Callahan, meanwhile, has impressed in his eight-game stint with the Bruins, especially on defense. In his rookie season, he’s already made an impact by blocking nine shots and showing his willingness to sacrifice his body for the team.

Given the opportunity to play in the AHL during this break, both Poitras and Callahan could see extended time in Boston depending on how the team performs post-break. For Poitras, in particular, this is an important time to continue proving he’s ready to secure a regular spot in the NHL next season.
