Some Seahawks fans may believe that new head coach Mike Macdonald has the power to shape Seattle’s roster, but that responsibility ultimately falls on general manager John Schneider. While Macdonald is in charge of coaching and game-planning, it’s Schneider who decides which players stay or go.
Earlier this offseason, Macdonald acknowledged that he has no real say in whether Geno Smith remains on the team. However, what he can control is where Smith stands on the depth chart. In that regard, the coaching staff made the right call keeping Smith as QB1 instead of replacing him with Sam Howell for the 2024 season.
Looking ahead, if Smith remains on the roster beyond this season, Macdonald and new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak will likely continue with him as the starter. The bigger question is whether Macdonald truly believes Smith is the long-term answer under center. While some might speculate that Seattle could pursue a new quarterback in 2026, Macdonald doesn’t sound like a coach preparing for a change.
Macdonald Confident in Smith’s Super Bowl Potential
In a recent interview with Aaron Levine of Seattle’s FOX 13, Macdonald made a bold declaration: Not only does he see Smith as Seattle’s long-term starter, but he also believes the team can win a Super Bowl with him.
“Geno is our quarterback… I don’t understand the conversation (about replacing him). It’s pretty obvious this guy is a heck of a quarterback. We love him. Can’t wait to go to work with him… And I know he’s really excited about (Kubiak) taking over. This guy, yeah, he’s a great player, man. And we can win a championship with Geno Smith,” Macdonald told Levine.
While it’s possible that Macdonald is simply presenting an optimistic front this offseason, his enthusiasm for Smith seems genuine. He could have taken a more measured approach, acknowledging that improvements are needed on offense. Instead, he gave an emphatic endorsement of his quarterback.
Of course, Macdonald’s belief in Smith won’t ultimately determine his fate. That decision still rests with John Schneider. If the GM shares his coach’s confidence, Smith’s position is safe. But if doubts linger within Seattle’s front office, the Seahawks could still explore their options in the coming years. For now, Macdonald is all in on Geno Smith—and only time will tell if his faith is rewarded with a championship.
