The Los Angeles Lakers were shaping up as legitimate contenders to challenge the Boston Celtics after making a splash at the trade deadline by acquiring Luka Doncic and Mark Williams. However, their deal for the 7-foot Hornets center has fallen apart.
On Saturday, the Lakers officially rescinded the trade, citing that Charlotte had “failed to satisfy a condition” of the agreement. According to Shams Charania of ESPN.com, Williams did not pass his physical due to multiple underlying health concerns, prompting Los Angeles to void the transaction.
Initially, the Lakers had agreed to send Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2031 first-round pick, and a 2030 first-round pick swap to the Hornets in exchange for Williams. The deal was finalized on Thursday, pending physicals, but ultimately unraveled when Williams’ health issues came to light.
Injuries have plagued Williams throughout his tenure in Charlotte, with recurring back problems limiting him to just 42 games over the past year and a half. Despite his durability concerns, he has posted solid numbers this season, averaging 15.6 points and 9.6 rebounds in 23 games. The Lakers had envisioned him as a crucial piece to fill the void left by Anthony Davis, who was sent to Dallas in the blockbuster Doncic trade.
With the trade deadline now in the rearview mirror, the Lakers have no opportunity to renegotiate and must seek alternative options to reinforce their frontcourt. Maxi Kleber, also acquired in the Doncic trade, remains sidelined for two more months, leaving Los Angeles thin at the center position. Currently, Jaxson Hayes, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Christian Wood will hold down the paint, but the front office is expected to scour the buyout market for reinforcements. Among the best available big men are Mo Bamba, Daniel Theis, and PJ Tucker.
The Lakers will get their next shot at the Celtics when the two teams clash in Boston on March 8.
