Ever since Myles Garrett publicly requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions have frequently been mentioned as a potential destination. When asked by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press about the idea of playing for Detroit, Garrett gave a brief but telling response: “Not yet.”
Realistically, however, the odds of the Lions pulling off a blockbuster trade for Garrett are slim. The deal would likely require multiple high-value draft picks possibly multiple first-rounders something that clashes with the Lions’ core approach to building their roster. Not to mention, acquiring Garrett would almost certainly mean committing to a massive contract extension.
That being said, the Lions should at least entertain discussions with the Browns, as numerous top-tier teams are already lining up for a shot at landing the star pass rusher.
One of the biggest obstacles in any potential deal is Cleveland’s financial situation. Trading Garrett would significantly impact the Browns’ salary cap, and general manager Andrew Berry has remained firm in his stance against moving the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year.
At the NFL Honors ceremony on Thursday night, Steve Wyche of NFL Network captured an interesting moment Garrett chatting with Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and quarterback Jared Goff. Naturally, this sparked a wave of speculation among Lions fans. Could they have been discussing a potential team-up in Detroit?
Hutchinson Shares His Honest Take on a Garrett-Lions Union
Speaking with Birkett on the NFL Honors red carpet, Hutchinson first addressed his recovery from a broken leg, assuring that had the Lions made the Super Bowl, he likely would have been ready to play.
“I think so, but you never know,” he said.
Of course, Birkett couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ask about the possibility of adding Garrett to Detroit’s defensive line.
“Everyone’s asking me about that. I don’t know,” Hutchinson admitted. “I don’t think—you can’t have that many dudes on one D-line. I don’t know. Who knows, but I think it’s very unlikely.”
Hutchinson’s response reflects reality. The Lions have already invested heavily in their defensive front, with Alim McNeill securing a big contract and Hutchinson himself likely in line for a lucrative extension soon. Adding Garrett would require another major financial commitment, along with the steep trade cost.
While it might be a bit of a buzzkill for hopeful fans, Hutchinson understands how the Lions’ front office operates. Until Garrett’s situation is officially settled, the door isn’t completely shut—but for now, it remains highly improbable.
