On Thursday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler revealed that Shane Waldron, the former offensive coordinator for the Seahawks, has been hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars as their passing game coordinator. Waldron, who served as Seattle’s offensive play-caller from 2021-2023, was the last to hold the OC position during Pete Carroll’s tenure.
Waldron’s most recent stint was with the Chicago Bears, where he was the offensive coordinator in 2024. However, he was let go after just nine games. Despite a strong 4-2 start with the Bears, which included four games where they scored over 24 points, Waldron’s offense struggled in the second half of the season, failing to score more than 27 points across the next three games, including a mere three points against the New England Patriots in Week 10.
Now, Waldron will join the Jaguars as their passing game coordinator, working under new head coach Liam Coen and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski. Interestingly, Udinski was a candidate who interviewed twice for Seattle’s OC position before the Seahawks ultimately hired Klint Kubiak.
Though Waldron and Udinski have never coached together, Waldron does have history with Coen. Between 2018 and 2020, Waldron and Coen were both on the Los Angeles Rams’ staff under Sean McVay. Waldron was the Rams’ passing game coordinator, while Coen served as an assistant wide receivers coach and later assistant quarterbacks coach.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Seahawks will face the AFC South, which includes a road trip to Jacksonville. By that time, Waldron will have already been fired, marking this as the Seahawks’ first game against Waldron since he left Seattle after the 2023 season.
