Auburn football remains one of the most perplexing programs in the nation, caught between optimism and uncertainty. There’s a sense of excitement surrounding the influx of talent, but also fear about whether it will be enough to overcome the inconsistent coaching that has marked Hugh Freeze’s first two years at the helm.
In their analysis, The Athletic’s Kennington Smith III and Seth Emerson acknowledge the growing expectations while reminding readers of the tumultuous road Auburn has traveled under Freeze’s leadership so far.
Quarterback Jackson Arnold, wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr., and offensive tackles Xavier Chaplin and Mason Murphy received special mention as key pieces in the program’s potential resurgence.
“The 5-7 record in 2024 was underwhelming, but the program is headed in a positive direction thanks to a surge in talent. Will quarterback play improve in 2025? Jackson Arnold, the former five-star prospect from Oklahoma, arrives with hopes of revitalizing his career. He’ll have plenty of support. Wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. (formerly of Georgia Tech) is considered the top skill player in the portal, according to 247Sports. Offensive tackles Xavier Chaplin (Virginia Tech) and Mason Murphy (USC) each bring over 20 career starts. Auburn secured six top-100 players through the portal, tied for second-most in the SEC behind LSU, and has signed back-to-back top-10 high school recruiting classes. While Freeze has been given assurances that his job is safe for now, the 2025 season looms as a pivotal one for a program that has been waiting for Freeze’s high school recruits to mature into a championship-contending team.
In a twist of fate, Freeze benefited from the swift failure of Bryan Harsin. Under normal circumstances, a 11-14 record after two years at Auburn would have been unforgivable, but Harsin’s rapid exit shielded Freeze from such scrutiny. However, that grace period is coming to an end, and the pressure is mounting for Freeze to deliver results in 2025.
