Matt Eberflus, the former Bears head coach, is building his new staff as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, and he’s bringing two familiar faces with him. On Wednesday, the Cowboys announced the hiring of linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi and safeties coach Andre Curtis, who will retain their same roles under Eberflus.
Both Borgonzi and Curtis were key members of Eberflus’ staff during his three years with the Bears, with Borgonzi having followed him over from the Colts.
During Eberflus’ tenure with the Bears, the defense initially struggled, ranking as the worst in the league in his first season as they underwent a roster rebuild. However, they made notable improvements, finishing 20th in points allowed in 2023 and 13th in 2024. Despite these strides, Eberflus’ overall record as head coach was 14-32, leading to his dismissal in November.
After interviewing with the Bengals and Falcons this offseason but losing out on both positions, Eberflus was hired by new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer on Tuesday. Eberflus previously served as the Cowboys’ linebackers coach and passing-game coordinator from 2011 to 2017 before joining the Colts as defensive coordinator and eventually taking the head coaching job with the Bears.
Meanwhile, new Bears head coach Ben Johnson has yet to finalize his coaching staff for the upcoming season. As of Wednesday, tight ends coach Jim Dray and defensive line coach Travis Smith remain under contract from Eberflus’ staff.
