JUST IN: Shocking NFL Update Delivers Game-Changing News for Patriots and Their $36.6 Million Quarterback.

After finishing with a 4-13 record for the second consecutive year, the New England Patriots weren’t entirely shocked to find themselves absent from the 2024 Pro Bowl — now rebranded as the “Pro Bowl Games.” The only player initially selected was special teams standout Brendan Schooler, who earned All-Pro honors for his exceptional play. However, Schooler was forced to withdraw due to an upcoming surgery, leaving the Patriots without a Pro Bowl player for the first time since 2000, when a rookie head coach named Bill Belichick led the team to a disappointing 5-11 record.

For the next 23 years, Belichick’s Patriots became a Pro Bowl fixture, sending at least two players each season, even during tough years like 2023 when edge rusher Matt Judon earned a nod. In the prime seasons of 2007, 2010, and 2011, the Patriots sent as many as eight players to the prestigious event.

Patriots’ Rookie QB Lands His First Pro Bowl Spot

With Schooler out, the Patriots seemed poised to end their remarkable Pro Bowl streak. But on January 30, 2024, the Patriots received some unexpected good news. The NFL announced that 22-year-old rookie quarterback Drake Maye, a former star at North Carolina, would be heading to the Pro Bowl Games in Orlando, Florida.

Maye will join the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Russell Wilson and the Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow as part of the AFC’s quarterback roster. While Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson and Buffalo’s Josh Allen were initially named to the team, Allen withdrew due to a wrist injury, and Jackson opted out, making room for Maye.

The Patriots selected Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after an outstanding career at UNC, where he amassed 8,018 passing yards and 63 touchdowns in just 30 games.

Pro Bowl Honors Wrap Up Impressive Rookie Campaign for Maye

Signed to a four-year, $36.6 million contract with a $23.5 million signing bonus, Maye started the season on the bench as veteran Jacoby Brissett took the reins. After a surprise Week 1 win over Cincinnati, the Patriots went on a four-game losing streak. Maye eventually stepped in as the starter, leading the team to two wins in his first 11 starts. His final start came in Week 18 against Buffalo, where he played just one sequence before rookie backup Joe Milton took over.

Despite the team’s struggles, Maye’s individual performance was strong, throwing for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns across his 12 starts.

Additionally, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook was named to the AFC Pro Bowl Games squad, replacing Derrick Henry of Baltimore.
