Denver Broncos defensive backs coach Jim Leonhard has decided to stay in Denver despite significant interest from other NFL teams. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, three organizations approached Leonhard with defensive coordinator opportunities, but he chose to continue building his legacy with the Broncos.
Leonhard, a former NFL safety who played from 2005 to 2014—including a stint with the Broncos in 2012—has emerged as one of the league’s most promising defensive minds. His coaching career began at Wisconsin, where he rose from defensive backs coach to defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2022. After serving briefly as interim head coach, he moved to Illinois as a senior football analyst before joining the Broncos last season. Now locked in through 2025, Leonhard’s decision signals his commitment to shaping Denver’s future.
The Broncos’ secondary flourished under Leonhard’s leadership. All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II became a favorite for Defensive Player of the Year, while rookie Riley Moss established himself as a reliable starter. Additionally, first-year player Kris Abrams-Draine flashed exciting potential, and safety Brandon Jones enjoyed a career-best season. With Leonhard steering the group into his second season, the unit is primed for even greater accomplishments.
Leonhard isn’t the only Broncos coach drawing league-wide attention. Tight ends coach Declan Doyle has accepted an offensive coordinator role with the Chicago Bears, while pass game coordinator John Morton is in the running for the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator position. Special teams assistant Chris Banjo has interviewed for multiple coordinator jobs, and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and senior executive David Shaw remain popular candidates for head coaching roles. Meanwhile, assistant general manager Darren Mougey has already landed a new role as general manager of the New York Jets.
The success of Sean Payton’s coaching staff has transformed Denver into an attractive destination for NFL talent. The Broncos, once considered an AFC afterthought, are now back in contention and firmly in the spotlight. As Payton’s staff continues to attract suitors, Leonhard’s decision to stay highlights his dedication to the team’s long-term vision.
