Elon Musk on Motivating ‘Smart People’: ‘The Goal is…’

In Walter Isaacson’s biography of Elon Musk, the billionaire is portrayed as someone deeply focused on the smallest details, from the springs used in the Cybertruck to the placement of Twitter’s servers. Musk, however, hasn’t read the book, despite granting Isaacson access to his work across six companies over two years.

Often labeled a micromanager, Musk rejects the term, arguing that skilled employees require minimal oversight. In an interview with Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norway’s wealth fund, Musk explained, “I wouldn’t call it micromanagement, it’s just insisting on attention to detail. To create a perfect product, detail is crucial.”

Musk also shared how he adapts his management style based on individuals’ capabilities. He believes that “smart people manage themselves” and can thrive anywhere. To keep them motivated, he sets clear goals and allows them autonomy in achieving them. Musk said, “I tell them, ‘Here’s the goal we’re aiming for. If you agree, let’s get it done.’” Occasionally, he steps in, adding, “Sometimes you have to say, ‘Trust me on this one.’”

Comparisons are often drawn between Musk and other tech leaders like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, who also paid meticulous attention to detail.
