Saints Appoint Chiefs Matt Nagy as New Head Coach in Latest ESPN Report…

The New Orleans Saints are reportedly considering Matt Nagy, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, as their next head coach. With the Saints in need of a new leader, Nagy’s name has surfaced as a potential candidate. Nagy initially gained prominence with the Chiefs, running the offense with Alex Smith before transitioning to head coach of the Chicago Bears, where he led Mitchell Trubisky. After four seasons in Chicago, Nagy returned to Kansas City, serving as Patrick Mahomes’ quarterback coach in 2022 and regaining the offensive coordinator role in 2023.

Nagy played a crucial role in the Chiefs’ 2023 Super Bowl victory and helped the offense navigate several injuries in 2024, which has sparked renewed interest in him for head coaching roles. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Saints are expected to interview Nagy before making a final decision.

Although Nagy is currently with the Chiefs, he is perhaps best remembered for his tenure with the Bears. He began his head coaching career in 2018 by guiding the team to a 12-4 record and a Pro Bowl selection for Trubisky, earning Coach of the Year honors. However, subsequent seasons were less successful, culminating in a 6-11 record in 2021, leading to his dismissal.

Despite his struggles in Chicago, Nagy may be granted another opportunity. His lack of success without a franchise quarterback is notable, but Trubisky’s performance outside Chicago suggests Nagy wasn’t entirely at fault. While he may not be the first choice for teams, he could be a viable option for those missing out on top candidates like Ben Johnson or Mike Vrabel. The Saints now face the decision of whether to trust an unfamiliar candidate or stick with someone they know.

While Nagy is a contender, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn appears to be the favorite for the position. Glenn, a former Saints assistant, has been instrumental in transforming the Lions into Super Bowl contenders. Given General Manager Mickey Loomis’ preference for familiar faces, Glenn seems likely to get the job. However, if Nagy impresses during his interview, Loomis might reconsider and choose the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator.
