JUST IN: Chiefs Make Bold Move by Reinstating Cornerback Jaylen Watson, While Strategically Resting Key Players Ahead of Crucial Denver Clash.

The Chiefs activated cornerback Jaylen Watson from the injured list on Friday, offering a glimmer of hope that one of their top defensive players will be ready for the playoffs in just a couple of weeks.

Watson, 26, had earned a starting role alongside Trent McDuffie in training camp and was performing at a high level before injuring his ankle during a 28-18 win over the 49ers in Week 7. Initially, the Chiefs doubted his return this season, but after a remarkably quick recovery, Watson now has a chance to suit up for the postseason. Kansas City, having secured the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye, won’t play again until at least January 18.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared optimism after Friday’s practice: “He’s really done well coming back… He was out there until the end and moving around pretty good from what I saw.”

Although Sunday’s game against the Broncos holds no bearing on the Chiefs’ playoff standing, it’s crucial for Denver, which must win to stay in playoff contention. Reid had already confirmed that quarterback Patrick Mahomes would sit out, with backup Carson Wentz stepping in as the starter. In addition, right tackle Jawaan Taylor (knee) and running back Isiah Pacheco (ribs) were ruled out for the game.

Several other key players defensive tackle Chris Jones, tight end Travis Kelce, cornerback Trent McDuffie, pass rusher George Karlaftis, safety Justin Reid, and linebackers Nick Bolton and Drue Tranquill are doubtful and expected to miss the game.

Reid mentioned that former Pro Bowl left tackle D.J. Humphries, who signed with the Chiefs mid-season but injured his hamstring in his first game on December 8 against the Chargers, could make his return against Denver. The Chiefs are hopeful that some game action will help him shake off the rust before the playoffs. “He looked like he did good today,” Reid added.

Watson’s return would provide a major lift to a Chiefs defense that ranks second in scoring, fourth against the rush, and 14th against the pass. While Joshua Williams had filled in for Watson, his inconsistent performances led the team to experiment with other defensive backs like Nazeeh Johnson, Chamarri Conner, and Chris Roland-Wallace.

Reid praised Watson’s determination throughout his rehab: “He’s been doing so well that I figured he’d be out there to give it a whirl. He was moving around pretty good. I’ll be curious to see how he feels after today’s practice and tomorrow.”
