Braves’ Decision on Charlie Morton Leaves Fans Puzzled as Orioles Secure Veteran Pitcher

The Braves are becoming accustomed to bidding farewell to their beloved players. After parting ways with Freddie Freeman, Dansby Swanson, and Max Fried, they now see veteran Charlie Morton join the Orioles. Morton signed a one-year, $15 million contract, which ESPN’s David Schoenfield graded as a B.

Despite a 4.19 ERA last season, Morton’s skillset, particularly his curveball, remains effective. Over four seasons with the Braves, he maintained a 3.87 ERA across 124 starts. While his performance has declined slightly, it hasn’t been a drastic fall typical of aging pitchers.

Orioles fans may feel disheartened after missing out on top-tier pitchers like Corbin Burnes, but Morton offers reliability. He made at least 30 starts and pitched over 160 innings in each of his four seasons with Atlanta. His durability and consistent form make him a solid fourth starter, and some even view his $15 million deal as a potential bargain.

The decision not to retain Morton has puzzled some Braves fans. Reports from Ken Rosenthal and David O’Brien reveal the team had discussions with Morton about returning, but negotiations fell through, prompting Morton to explore other options.

Rosenthal and O’Brien also noted the Braves’ intention to acquire a proven starter. However, they face challenges in finding a deal that aligns with their budget and avoids sacrificing multiple prospects from their lower-ranked farm system.

With the offseason still ongoing, the direction of Braves’ General Manager Alex Anthopoulos remains uncertain.
