Lindsey Vonn, 40, Announces St. Moritz World Cup Comeback…
Legendary skier Lindsey Vonn has confirmed her return to World Cup competition in St. Moritz on December 21-22, marking her comeback nearly six years after retiring at age 40.
“She’s back,” declared Red Bull, her sponsor, in an Instagram post featuring a smiling Vonn saying, “I hear St. Moritz is nice this time of year.”
The Olympic and world champion retired in 2019 following numerous injuries but has regained her form after a successful right knee replacement surgery in April.
“My body is finally put back together,” Vonn stated. “Life is short, and when opportunities arise, you have to seize them. There’s nothing I love more than ski racing.”
When Vonn retired, she held the record for the most World Cup victories by a woman, with 82 wins. This record has since been surpassed by Mikaela Shiffrin, who now holds 99 victories.
Vonn has secured a “wild card” entry to compete in two super-G races at St. Moritz, utilizing a new system that allows retired athletes to re-enter the elite circuit with improved starting positions.
Last week, she participated in lower-tier super-G races at Copper Mountain in the U.S., finishing 19th and 24th, just over two seconds behind the winners.
“I see it as a success. Some might say I was slow, but I think it was great,” she remarked.
Before her St. Moritz races, Vonn will act as the opener for the World Cup events this weekend at Beaver Creek, where downhill and super-G races are scheduled.
