Philadelphia Eagles Legend Bill Bergey Passes Away at 79

Bill Bergey, a celebrated linebacker and Eagles Hall of Famer, has died at the age of 79 following a three-year battle with cancer. His son, Jake Bergey, a former professional lacrosse player, shared the news on social media, calling his father an extraordinary man and a great influence in his life.

In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Jake wrote, “After a long, hard 3-year battle, Dad lost his fight with cancer. The best father, friend, grandfather, football player, and outright great person in this world. I will truly miss him. Love you, Dad.”

A Career to Remember

Bill Bergey, originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1969, became a standout player after being traded to the Eagles in 1974. Known for his fierce tackling and leadership, he earned Pro Bowl honors four times during his tenure in Philadelphia and was named a first-team All-Pro in 1974 and 1975.

Despite retiring after the Eagles’ 1980 Super Bowl XV appearance, Bergey remains a prominent figure in NFL history. His 27 career interceptions rank among the top 10 for linebackers in league history, and his 18 interceptions with the Eagles tie him for the franchise record. Bergey was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 2009, solidifying his legacy in Philadelphia sports.

A Battle with Cancer

Diagnosed with oral cancer in 2021, Bergey openly shared how he found strength and support from friends, family, and fellow athletes, including Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly. In an interview last year, Bergey credited his children and wife, Micky Kay, for their unwavering support, stating, “My kids stepped up to the plate like I’ve never seen before.”

Even amid his health challenges, Bergey maintained his connection with the Eagles, frequently attending training camps and engaging with the team.

Contributions Beyond the Field

After retiring from professional football, Bergey remained a visible figure in the Eagles community, working as a radio commentator and contributing to pregame and postgame shows. He spent his post-football years living in Chadds Ford, Delaware County, and stayed active in supporting the team and its fans.

Bill Bergey’s resilience, both on and off the field, continues to inspire, and his legacy as a Philadelphia Eagles legend will endure.
